Compounding is commonly carried out using co-kneaders, twin-screw extruders (co-rotating or counter-rotating) or internal mixers. Polymers and additives are continuously fed into the process through a hopper. Inside the extruder, the materials are conveyed through a temperature-controlled barrel where they are melted, mixed and homogenised by the rotating screw(s).
The process parameters, including temperature profile, screw configuration and residence time, are adjusted to match the polymer system and formulation. After melt mixing, the homogeneous compound is extruded through a die and cooled by water or air before being pelletised for further processing.
