Chain Extenders

Chain extenders are molecules with reactive, functional groups. During processing at high temperature, a chemical reaction takes place with specific functional groups of, in this case, the carboxyl groups of condensation polymers like PET and PLA. During processing, new bonds are formed between surrounding polymer chains, thereby increasing the molecular weight of the polymer. Longer or even branched polymer chains will result in reduced melt flow (lower MFI) and increased intrinsic viscosity (IV) enabling a broader range of processing and generating stronger, more resilient materials with an optimal weight-to-performance ratio.

Increase the molecar weight with Compovate chain extenders

Compovate produces chain extenders that are used to increase the molecular weight of polymer chains and boost performance. We offer two grades: one for PET or PET-based blends and one for PLA or biopolymer blends. Both are available in dust-free, granular form.

Chain extendersChain extenders can be used in almost all plastic converting techniques such as injection moulding, blow moulding, filament, pipe, tape, profile, sheet extrusion, 3D printing. In blends, chain extenders act as compatibilizer, stabilizing the blend, improving processability and enhancing material performance.

Compovate chain extenders in biocomposites

Biocomposites that are partly PLA-biopolymer based and contain natural, plant-based fibres or fillers, like wood, hemp, flax, jute, sisal, abaca, bamboo, cellulose, and others, benefit greatly from the use of Compovate chain extenders. This is because the chain extenders also react with the hydroxyl (OH-) groups present in virtually all plant-based natural fibres or

fillers. So, when compounded or blended, there is not only a mechanical connection between the polymers and the natural fibres or fillers, that forms during the high pressure melt phase, chemical bonds are also formed. That results in higher performance, lower moisture uptake, longer lifetime and a wider processing window.

plastics recyclingCompovate chain extenders in recycling

Recycled materials are often associated with lower performance than virgin materials. Not anymore! Recycled PLA and PET can now be “repaired” and restored to a state that closely resembles virgin material by using the Compovate chain extenders. Due to mechanical damage and hydrolysis due to the presence of moisture, PLA and PET recycling can be a challenge. Adding Compovate chain extender can help restore these properties and bring back much of the original prime strength and toughness to the polymer. Influence of foreign contamination like other polymers or even solids, cannot, of course, be corrected, but even these components can be compatibilized, to some extent.
