During filament extrusion, thermoplastic materials are melted inside an extruder and conveyed towards a die containing one or more precisely machined openings. As the molten polymer exits the die, continuous filaments are formed and subsequently cooled by air or water to solidify the material while maintaining dimensional accuracy.
The finished filaments are wound onto spools or processed further into end products. Depending on the application, both single-layer and multilayer filament extrusion can be used to achieve specific functional or mechanical properties.
To optimise processing and product performance, functional additives can be incorporated into the formulation. These additives can improve processability, mechanical properties, thermal stability and the overall performance of the extruded filament.
