Extrusion Blow Moulding

Extrusion blow moulding is a widely used manufacturing process for producing hollow plastic products in high volumes. During the process, thermoplastic compounds are melted in an extruder and formed into a hollow tube, known as a parison. The parison is positioned between the two halves of a mould, which then closes around it. Compressed air is introduced to inflate the parison, forcing the molten plastic against the walls of the mould cavity. Once cooled and solidified, the mould opens and the finished product is ejected.

Extrusion blow moulding offers excellent design flexibility and is used to manufacture products with a wide range of functional requirements. Depending on the application, materials and structures can be tailored to provide chemical resistance, enhanced mechanical performance or high barrier properties against oxygen, gases and aromas. For example, barrier layers based on polyamide (PA) or ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) are commonly used where product protection and shelf life are critical.

To achieve stable processing and consistent product quality, manufacturers often rely on specialty additives that enhance both processability and material performance. Chain extenders, for example, can improve melt strength and processing stability, particularly when working with recycled materials or engineering polymers.
