Once the mould is closed, hydraulic pressure compresses the material, allowing it to flow and completely fill the mould cavity. Depending on the material system, the polymer is either cured or cooled under controlled conditions until the final part has solidified. After opening the mould, the finished component is removed and, if required, further finished.
The performance of compression moulded parts can be enhanced by incorporating functional additives into the material. Depending on the application, additives such as chain extenders, stabilisers and fillers can improve processability, mechanical properties and long-term performance.
