During extrusion coating, the polymer is melted and conveyed through an extruder before being extruded through a flat slot die onto a continuously moving substrate. The molten polymer forms a permanent bond with the substrate and is immediately cooled to create a uniform coating layer.
Commonly used polymers include polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA). The choice of material depends on the required end-product properties, such as moisture resistance, oxygen barrier performance, sealability, adhesion and printability.
To optimise processing and product performance, functional additives can be incorporated into the formulation. Depending on the application, tie resins, chain extenders and other performance-enhancing additives can improve adhesion, processability and the overall quality of the coated structure.
